Argo: Egill Bjarnason - Icelandic Transformations

How did Iceland change the world and how did it change itself?

Icelandic journalist Egill Bjarnason, the author of How Iceland Changed the World (Argo, 2022), will be visiting this year's Days of the North festival on the theme of progress.

Iceland is a country with a progressive political scene, boasting the oldest parliament in the world and the first female president in Europe. It also leads the world in green solutions: it makes extensive use of hydro and geothermal energy, renewable energy and emphasises waste separation. It is rich in culture, a nation of musicians and writers. However, the island has not escaped negative influences, notably the melting of the glaciers due to climate change, the migration of the population to the capital Reykjavik and the associated depopulation of the countryside, and the huge increase in the number of tourists since 2000.

Egill Bjarnason will lead the debate with Klára Dvořáková, Honorary Consul of Iceland in the Czech Republic. We will also touch upon her role and workload in representing the smallest Nordic country in the Czech Republic.

Moderated by Barbora Grečnerová.
