Argo Publishing: The Dog with the Throat
The Argo Publishing House in cooperation with the Arctic Festival and the Unijazz Reading Room invite you to the launch of the book Dog with a Throat (GUNVOR BJERREOVÁ, ELISA MAQEOVÁ), accompanied by an exhibition of Martin Velíšek's illustrations, and the band Už jsme doma will play.
The evening will be guided by the translator of the book Zdeněk Lyčka.
In this unique collection of Greenlandic tales and myths you will find - with a few exceptions - texts never before published in Czech. Their distinctiveness stems from the specific way of life of the Inuit people in the harsh natural conditions of the island, which is permanently covered with ice for the most part. For centuries, the local inhabitants have told themselves stories that are nothing like our fairy tales and legends. They are teeming with wild monsters, animals taking on human form and people with unprecedented abilities. You will meet trolls and trollish women, one-legged or one-eyed giants, a gigantic worm, but also a dog that acts like a woman, wears short trousers and a bun with coloured ribbons on its head. In short, young and adult readers alike will undoubtedly enjoy the story. Perhaps because the fairy tales have original illustrations by Martin Velíšek. After all, his pictures also adorned Knud Rasmussen's popular Greenland Myths and Tales (Argo, 2007).
Free admission.
