Pavel Klusák: Suchý & Šlitr - The Story of Semafor in the 1960s

Pavel Klusák's audio-visual programme is a follow-up to the book of the same name, which will be published by Host in September 2024 and is accompanied by the publisher's campaign. In the programme, we return to the magnificent phenomenon of joyful, clever and unique poetic songs, with which Jiří Suchý and Jiří Šlitr united perhaps the whole of Czechoslovakia and even managed to pass on their popularity to later generations. We play lesser-known examples of Šlitr's irresistible comedy, authorial talents and proof that S&Š were not just authors "for the clever minority", but actually conquered the mainstream of contemporary pop culture. We ask ourselves questions worthy of the 21st century: did Semafor put an end to the atmosphere of the 1950s in our country? How did it happen that in the sixties, the era of the emerging beat, the older style of swing song took hold so strongly in our country? What about the composer Šlitr's admiration for the West? Can we talk about "feminism according to Semaphore"? How to think about the friendship between Suchý and Šlitr and how to think about Šlitr's tragic death?

The programme will satisfy those who want to recall the joyful pop culture phenomenon of the golden era of Semaphore. Above all, however, it appeals to younger generations and leads a debate about Semaphore - probably for the first time - in the cultural context of the 21st century.
