Argo: Launch of two novels from the AAA edition: by Ben Lerner and Rita Bullwinkel

An evening dedicated to two novels from the AAA edition of Argo: 22:04 by Ben Lerner and A Blow on the Head by Rita Bullwinkel. Petr Onufer, editor of Argo Publishing House, will give a talk on the books by their translators Petr Fantys and Olga Bártová.
Ben Lerner is one of the most acclaimed authors of contemporary American literature - his prose has been described as "Ben Lerner has an unprecedented range of voice and a refined linguistic sensibility. His writing is among the high points of contemporary American prose." (New York Times); "Despite the author's immense breadth and stylistic mastery, his books are accessible to anyone who wants to learn something essential about our troubled times." (Washington Post); "Lerner is a dazzlingly intelligent writer (...) Anyone who wants to understand contemporary America should pick up his books." (The Times). All this is also true of the author's second novel, 22:04, which is generally considered the pinnacle of Lerner's work.
Rita Bullwinkel's critically and critically acclaimed novel, Punch to the Head, follows the lives of eight young female boxers who converge on Reno, Nevada, from different parts of the United States for a two-day junior boxing championship. In doing so, each chapter of the novel chronicles a single bout, from the quarterfinals to the unexpectedly stacked finals. In the author's narrative, the girls' pasts intersect with their futures - and the intersection is always a given boxing match; thanks to the author's exceptionally precise language, refined narrative style, and centrifugal imagery, the depiction of a ruthless boxing contest gradually transforms into a compelling parable about girls on the cusp of adulthood and their struggles with the world around them.
