Tomáš Braun: What the eyes cannot see

Tomáš Braun (1981) - an artist, translator, musician and high school teacher is intrinsically linked to the space of North Bohemia. His personal relationship to this region and the places of his childhood is reflected in his artistic work, which in Braun's case is the result of creative experimentation with matter, shapes, space and the world of human subconscious and memories.

Thanks to this, his works have a strong surrealistic touch and cubist shapes, but at the same time they are strongly expressive and the use of bright colours contrasts with the vigorous strokes of black outlines. According to the art historian Veronika Chmelařová, TOMB - as Braun's painting pseudonym sounds - enhances the emotional charge of the paintings, which often appear almost raw - but at the same time he manages to combine the hardness of lines with the tenderness of pastel colours and natural motifs. His works also feature dominant single figures or couples set in dreamy landscapes where movement and lightness can be admired.

Braun's ability not to be tied to a single technique or material contributes to this, but instead he combines and tests them to varying degrees. Whether it is acrylic, watercolour, oil painting, collage or photography, he uses everything to capture the symbolism of nature and its interconnectedness with human society.
