Here we go! The bell rings, school is out... But Reading Room isn't over yet! What do you have to look forward to before you head into the whirlwind of the holidays?

 

The week starts with another screening of 16mm film by Fila and Adam on Monday 26 June at 20:00. This time Vladimír Jiránek (author of Bob and Bobek) with a series of short cartoons, Jiří Brdečka with the adventures of Aria Prairie and others will be on the silver screen.

On Tuesday at 19:30 you can look forward to a concert by the Prague Quiet Music Collective, which will play music by Ian Mikysky inspired by the work of poet Petr Borkovec. The music is always based on texts whose central themes include the relationship to nature or the specific rhythm of experience.

On Wednesday 28 June at 18:00, another Openly about Prague debate will take place, this time on the care of Prague's cultural heritage. Do we appreciate enough the architectural values that have been preserved here? And how can we enrich the city with new projects without damaging them?

And Thursday is the last event of the month - a joint concert of Janny's Hog Ranch and Band of Heysek. Janny's Hog Ranch play a rough energetic fusion of rock and roll, disco, grunge and electro wave. Band of Heysek promises animalistic, blues-infused, raw and dirty songs. Start at 20:00.

There are two weeks left until the end of June and then we will go in the special mode of the Acoustic Summer, for which we announced last week an open call. Tomorrow - Tuesday 20 June - we will have the third of the memorial evenings with Olin Nejezchleb and Pavel Skálá, this time dedicated to Petr Kalandra, with whom both musicians have many experiences from both their personal and professional lives. Start at 19:00!

On Wednesday 21 June at 20:00 the band Fanfán Tulipán, founded by composer Eliška Vidomus, will play its original symbiosis of jazz, funk, film music and chanson with Estonian spices.

At the same time on Thursday you can look forward to another concert - this time the singer-songwriter Helena Kalambová and her band will perform. Her music combines elements of classical, ethno and indie pop, enhanced by melancholy and even dreaminess.

And it wouldn't be a Reading Room without a bit of literature, so we'll end the week with a literary event on Friday - a presentation of Stefan Segi's book Uncorrect Literature at 18:00. The book launch will be followed by a discussion on the relationship between literature and society and the related responsibilities of women writers*.

In the summer, you want to play it easy!

 

Play in the Unijazz Reading Room at one of our summer acoustic concerts. Whether you're starting a new musical project or have been at home on stage for years, we welcome your music in acoustic form. Invite your loved ones and your fan club to come and chill and tune in with us in the summer heat. During the evening there will be an opportunity for 3-4 projects to perform (soloists* and multi-member groups - acoustic playing is a prerequisite). Each project will get a maximum of 30 minutes of playing time, 150 CZK budget at the bar and money from the audience, collected during the performance "in the hat / in the case".

 

Technical conditions:
- there will be a power supply on the stage, max. two microphones with stands and an active loudspeaker for the vocals (without a sound engineer and PA)
- custom sound (e.g. 10-15W combo) for guitar, bass or keyboards can also be used. However, it will not be possible to install your own complete sound equipment
- percussion will include cajon, tambourine or other acoustic percussion. It will not be possible to use a full drum kit
- We don't want to limit ourselves in terms of genre, and we in the Reading Room organizing team would like to broaden our horizons.

 

We will then choose from the possible flood of interested *women* responsibly to the (d)ears of those listening.

Acoustic Summer in Čítárna Unijazz!

 

In summertime, it's time to play it easy! Take part in one of our summer acoustic concerts. Whether you're starting a new musical project or have been performing on stages for years, your music in acoustic form is welcome in our venue. Feel free to invite your friends and fans and come to cool down and tune in to Čítárna Unijazz in the summer heat. During the evening, there will be space for 3-4 projects to perform (both soloists and groups - acoustic playing is required). Each project will get max 30 minutes of playing time, 150 CZK budget at the bar and money from the audience, collected during the performance "into a hat / case".

 

Technical conditions:
- there will be an electricity connection on the stage, max. two
microphones with stands and an active loudspeaker for the vocals
(without a sound engineer and PA)
- your own small sound equipment (e.g. 10-15W combo) for guitar, bass or keyboards can also be used. However, it will not be possible to set up your own complete sound equipment
- for percussion, it will be possible to use a cajon, tambourine or
other acoustic percussion. It will not be possible to use a full drum
kit
- we don't want to limit ourselves in terms of genre, we ourselves in Čítárna Unijazz would like to broaden our horizons.

 

In case there is an enormous amount of musicians who would like to participate, we are going to choose responsibly to the audience's ears and souls.

Hello! The sun has come out again, but we are not afraid of it - you may have already noticed the original shade sails hanging over our yard! If you haven't seen them yet, be sure to stop by - you'll feel a bit like you're on a boat under them. And what kind of programme can you look forward to on this occasion?

 

Tomorrow - Tuesday, 13 June - we will have a literary massacre. While from 18:30 in the lounge (to the left of the entrance) the next episode of the podcast Čtení s Respektem will be recorded live, this time about Bruno Latour's books on the climate crisis and the post-pandemic development of society, from 19:00 in the main hall the publishing house Argo will have its regular evening, christening the new edition of Woody Allen's humorous prose The Weightless State.

On Wednesday 14 June it will not be open to the public until 20:00 due to a private event. Thank you for your understanding.

 

But we will make up for it the very next day with a concert by our friendly musicians Olin Nejezchleba (cello), Norbi Kovacs (guitar), Jakub Jedlinski (accordion) and Pavel Fischer (violin). On Friday, 16th June at 20:00 we will have another concert - this time a double concert of the band Krajina and singer Ira Mimosa. Irina The transparent music is woven of quiet melancholy, light, tenderness, wind and love. The country is looking for a way again back to the roots with music on the border of folklore and metal riffs.

And the best at the end!!! On Saturday 17th June from 19:00 we celebrate our first birthday in Krenovka in Žižkov! I'm sure you agree that such a thing must be celebrated properly, so come in as many numbers as possible! You can look forward to Robert Nebrensky (Vltava), Milan Urza from the band První hoře (First Mountain) and an afterparty by DJ Kalervo Salsa (Finland) and Jam Sessions. Later in the evening we will be joined by our friendly musicians from Respect festival!

We have one good news and one bad news for you. You can see the bad news *yourself* if you look out the window - it's started to rain. Now the good news! Not only do we have a roof in the Reading Room, but we have a full week of culture, so we offer the perfect sanctuary for rainy days!

Today, Monday 5 June at 19:00, we open a new exhibition - our walls will be flooded with photos Katka Trnková, Honza Walda Valík and Karel Šuster from last year's festival for the Jewish Quarter Boskovice. So if you don't have plans for the evening yet, come and tune in to the atmosphere of the festival, the next edition of which will start in exactly one month!

On Tuesday, with the almost evil date of 6 June, the next Jazzmania Vladimír Kouřil. This time we will listen to the pianist Erroll Garner, International Vienna Art Orchestra Mathias Rüegg, nostalgic melodies of the Czech-English trio of bassist Jiří Slavik and other jazz treasures. Who loves Chess, is already looking forward to Wednesday, when the next Unijazz Open tournament will take place in the Reading Room! So warm up your brains and we look forward to seeing you at our chess boards at 18:00.

 

On Thursday, 8th June, we are waiting for the long-awaited concert of the Pakistani artist Ustad Noor Bakhshea master who plays the benju, a traditional Baluch instrument. From 20:00 you can enjoy traditional melodies, love ghazals, trance rhythms and Bollywood hits.

And this time there will be a concert on Friday as well - from 20:00 the legend Czech black metal František Štorm, who will play in a perhaps a bit unexpected combination with Prague jazzmen Jan Horvath (drums) and Michal Hrubý (clarinet, saxophone). We have no idea what will come of it, so come and be surprised!

On Monday 29th May we will have Evening with Comenius, which will present Labyrinth of the World and Lusthauz Heart in a new edition. All fans of Czech language, literature and history are expected at 19:00!

Tuesday will bring Pub Quiza revived tradition from the old Reading Room. You think you have more insight than the others? Then come and confirm - or deny it! Abnormal contest for abnormal prizes from 7:00 p.m.

On Wednesday, 31 May at 20:00 we will have another screening of the old-fashioned - from 16mm film strip will be screened by Phila and Adam.

Thursday, as always, will be marked by music, and on the first Thursday in June, the band The Tin Turtleswho will be launching their new CD, together with the bands George Moon a The Surfing Turtles. Don't miss out on discounted tickets in advance!

Today, 22 May, from 18:00, we will have a regular Guest of Krenovka - this time Mr Petr Lapáček, a railway lover, who will dedicate his talk to the tracks, bridges, tunnels and railway stations in the vicinity of Krenovka.

Tomorrow from 19:00 our stage will belong to Revolver Revue and remembering two poets - Filip Topol and Cédric Demangeot. Jakub Gottwald, translator Petr Zavadil and the editors of Revolver will take part in the event.

Thursday 25th May will be a classic concert - from 20:00 the singer-songwriter Alen and singer David Pomahač will play. Alen works with intimacy, fragility and remarkable depth in his lyrics and music, David Pomahač founded the well-known urban folk duo Kieslowski and has now embarked on a solo career.

And on Saturday, the Žižkov Mezidvorky Neighbourhood Festival will start! Between one in the afternoon and seven in the evening you can expect a lot of experiences, which we are preparing in cooperation with DANCE PRAGUE, Krenovka Incubator a Krenovka.

On Tuesday, 9 May, we will christen two novels by Jack Kerouac in new Czech translations together with the publishing house Argo. After a discussion with translators Michaela Markova and Vít Penkala, the band T.G.P., which is inspired by Kerouac in its work, will play.
