Argo: Launch of Anne Carson's poetry collection Red Autobiography

Anne Carson (born 1950) is probably the most acclaimed living Anglophone poet, and her Autobiography of Red (1998), now published in Czech translation by Tomáš Gabriel at Argo Publishing, is one of the highlights of her work. It is a loose adaptation of the ancient Greek myth of Geryon, a winged red monster killed by Heracles. Carson draws on fragments of a surviving poem by the Greek poet Stesichorus, but sets her version of the ancient story in the contemporary world: in her rendition, Geryon is an adolescent boy with a passion for photography, a highly sensitive introvert who falls in love with the charismatic and emotionally unstable Heracles. This modern mythology is thus simultaneously a philosophical poem in prose, a queer love story, a bildungsroman, and a tragedy about vulnerability and unbalanced relationships.

The evening will be hosted by Petr Onufer, editor at Argo Publishing House; the book will be discussed by its translator, poet Tomáš Gabriel, and its editor, prose writer Marek Torčík.

The book will be available for purchase on site at a discounted price. Free admission.
