JWQ: Janoušek-Wróblewski Quartet

Štěpán Janoušek (trombone), Michal Wróblewski (saxophone), Miloš Klápště (double bass), Jan Chalupa (drums). JWQ is an acoustic quartet combining improvised music with compositions from the works of both woodwind players. The quartet was originally influenced by New York downtown jazz (Sex Mob, Medeski-Martin-Wood, Bobby Previte, Ray Anderson, Marty Ehlrich), but over time this direct inspiration has partially disappeared and the quartet has become an ensemble stealing from so many sources that it is a shame. The compositions are eclectic, the music draws from a variety of traditions, and it's all tied together with total improvisation. In October 2022, the ensemble released its second album: a stressed-out koala bear on the verge of strength accidentally burns himself in a forest fire in search of happiness. In March 2019, the ensemble released its debut virtual double album Weddings/Forests. Another album will be released in October 2021, the second album will reflect the ensemble's concerts, with the band freely combining improvised and composed pieces into a kind of long unit - in this case, a two-sided LP.

Štěpán Janoušek has been a trombone teacher at the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory for many years and occasionally teaches at the Frýdlant and Prague Jazz Workshops. He won the worldwide trombone competition J.J. He is a member of the theatre company Farma v jeskyni, collaborates with the contemporary music ensemble Berg as a member of the orchestra and as a soloist.

Michal Wróblewski is a saxophonist who, in addition to JWQ, leads the ensembles E Converso, Nejtek-Klápště-Wróblewski, Swomp and the Norwegian-Czech trio KIAP, which he founded while studying in Oslo. In addition, he is a member of the improvisational duo Karm (with German guitarist Torsten Papenheim) and the gipsy-jazz band Futur Swing. He also works as a composer of contemporary music, dramaturge of the Jazz Goes to Town festival and teacher (HAMU, JAMU, Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory, ZUŠ Kouřim).

Miloš Klápště is a bassist who currently plays in the bands of Aneta Langerová, Dorota Barová, Beata Hlavenková and the Tryptych ensemble. In the past he has worked with Nerez, Richard Muler, Sisa Feherova and Voila. In addition to double bass, he also plays bass guitar and synthesizers.

Jan Chalupa is a sought-after drummer. He works with the theatre group Farma v jeskyni, is a member of the ensembles Talaqpo, E Converso, a frequent guest of the Prague Improvisation Orchestra, and was formerly a member of the band Jananas. He studied at the JAMU, HAMU and the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory, and also works as a teacher.
