Romanovská Tichý Hrubý + HotPotFree

The RTH Trio consists of Anna Romanovská Fliegerová violin and koto, Petr Tichý double bass and Michal Hrubý clarinets, saxophone and flute. The trio is mainly engaged in free improvisation. The musicians themselves and the instruments they use for improvisation have very different musical backgrounds. Anna Romanovská has a classical musical background and is certainly strongly influenced by contemporary music, in whose territory she mostly moves. The Japanese thirteen-string zither called koto, which Anna plays, brings an oriental touch to the overall sound. Petr Tichý, whose musical foundations were laid by his studies of jazz double bass at the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory and the jazz department of the Prague Academy of Performing Arts, admits his roots in folk, folklore and folk music with his multi-genre approach to music. Michal Hrubý and his punk-folk musical foundation, augmented by his extraordinary musical knowledge across centuries and musical styles, adds a necessary element of the unexpected to the whole in a congenial way.

The HotPotFree sextet is a group of three Czech and three German musicians who met in 2023 at the Boskovice festival. These trios have been playing separately for a long time and both of them are mainly engaged in free improvisation. It was in this approach that they found a mutual understanding and the idea for a longer-term collaboration was born. The unique instrumentation complements each other perfectly and allows for an original and very varied palette of sounds and musical stylizations. The Sextet consists of violinist and koto player Anna Romanovská, cellist Sabine Grüner, pianist Anne-Kathrin Wagler, clarinetist, flutist and saxophonist Michal Hrubý, double bassist Petr Tichý and drummer Matthias Macht. The name HotPotFree loosely symbolizes the musicians' approach to creating, that is, mixing many ingredients in one pot, stirring them together and making them into a whole piece.
