The Jazz Section of the Musicians' Union, which eventually became Unijazz, is celebrating its 40th anniversary! Join us to commemorate the founding of the UN Park and the planting of the Friendship Trees.
The 40th Anniversary Celebration will be held at Kačerov on March 21 at 3pm.
Forty years ago, in 1985 (when it was mandatory to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the "liberation" by the Red Army), the Jazz Section organized a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and the end of World War II. On this occasion, the American writer Kurt Vonnegut Jr. visited the Jazz Section and, together with the American diplomats who accompanied him, planted several maple trees, the "trees of friendship" that became the foundation of the UN Park, which was also enlarged a year later by John Updike, accompanied by more than a hundred people. Shortly thereafter, on September 6, 1986, the entire Jazz Section committee was imprisoned.
The planted maple trees are still growing on Kačerovo near Ke Krčská stráni Street and it is here that the commemorative event will take place on 21 March.
