DPvJU + Jan Fic
The legendary band Dřevěné sacks in jute coals will once again attack the hearts of their fans*fans. Together with them will play Brno singer-songwriter Jan Fic, who will also christen his new album on Prague soil Homunculus.
DPvJU (Wooden sacks in jute coals)
Founded in 1988 as a studio project, the band has from the beginning chosen a crazy mix of musical styles and genres, poetry of various origins and unorthodox use of electronics. After seven self-released albums and thirty years of existence, the group announced an unspecified hiatus that stretched over three years. In the spring of 2022, they returned with an entirely new repertoire and a significantly altered line-up. Guitarist Max Braun is the sole founding father, and after many years as a saxophonist, Pavel Brno Heřman has switched to guitar. The new frontman is guitarist and singer Michal Cihla (ex-Ministry), and the instrumental star of the ensemble is trumpeter Luděk Emanovský, a lifelong professional with a portfolio ranging from the Marie Rottrová Orchestra to the Czech Philharmonic. The rhythmic backbone of the band is formed by drummer Libor Shomodi Veselý and his son Tadeáš. The repertoire is heavily dominated by brand new songs, slightly interspersed with a few "anti-hits" from the previous period, but in radically changed arrangements.
Jan Fic
The Brno singer-songwriter Jan Fic may have come from a blues background, but over the years his work has completely broken away from genre schemes without losing its firm anchorage in his musical roots. Already when he became a laureate of the prestigious Blues Aperitiv competition in Šumperk, he presented a very distinctive vision of an original song, which he fulfilled both musically and lyrically, as confirmed by the Prize for the Beauty of Words he received from Radio Proglas in Brno. Although Fico's songs often speak about the darker sides of human actions, they are deeply experienced by the author, but they also offer positive points of departure in a moderate way. Jan Fic has so far released three solo albums - City (2018, own circulation), Then (2020, Indies Scope) a Homunculus (2023, Indies Scope). The latter, which was released before the holidays, will be released at a concert in the Unijazz Reading Room.
