+about us+

V You will find refuge in our 'cosy living room' every day except Sunday, whether you need a place to study or just to chat with friends. In addition, we have a club programme several times a week - author readings, lectures and talks, film screenings as well as concerts and theatre performances. In addition, we open a new exhibition every month and you can come to a regular chess tournament. In addition, we are gradually moving books, magazines and music media from the original reading room here. For a better idea, take a look at program menu, to our photo gallery or to the offer bar.
Come and see if we have managed to bring some of the atmosphere of the original Reading Room in Jindřiška Street to Krenovka. A new history of the Unijazz Reading Room is being written, and we believe it will be a long history, and we look forward to you writing it with us.

Nour first Reading Room, which was gradually built from the former laboratories of the Dairy Research Institute over two years by enthusiastic Unijazz members entirely on their own, welcomed its first visitors to the Unijazz headquarters in the Jindřišská arcade in the centre of Prague in the autumn of 1997.

Since then, this space has provided a peaceful haven for all those who wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of the city centre, meet kindred spirits or catch an interesting show, for more than 20 years. All you had to do was ring the bell, go up to the fourth floor and you were in another world. There have been countless regular evening programmes - author readings, concerts, listening programmes, lectures with film screenings, talks on various cultural, ecological or social topics and exhibitions over the years. And of course there have been parties, not just the famous Christmas ones. In addition, it was possible to take a look at the archive, which, thanks to the kindness of numerous donors, contained a number of books, magazines, fanzines and various music carriers.

We eventually had to leave the space, which had become legendary even abroad. We put the equipment of the Reading Room in storage, moved the cherubs to our second Unijazz retreat in the historic Kaštan building in Břevnov, and moved most of the Reading Room's activities there. However, the situation certainly did not look hopeless, right from the edge of 2019 we started negotiations with representatives of the company SUDOP about the possibility of opening a new Reading Room in Krenovka, where this company, which owns the building, planned to build a cultural space. The building, which is a listed building, was in need of complete reconstruction, so it was clear that it would take some time. The advantage, however, was that we could be present during the reconstruction and, at least partially, 'tailor' the space.

The moment ended up dragging on longer than expected due to various circumstances, but the Reading Room was certainly not idle at the time. It turned into a Reading Room on the Road and offered its programmes not only in Kaštan, but also in many other places in Prague. In addition, at a time when it was not possible to cultivate culture live, we produced a podcast called Better than a wire in the eye and in collaboration with Žižkovská noce we published in 2021 the anthology Halftime of Disintegration, which was selected from the contributions of the open literary call of the same name.

Čítárna's journey ended on 18 June 2022 and from that day on you will find us at our new address at Husitská 22 in Žižkov, where we are based in the lovely company of the Krenovka Incubator - a studio platform for the young art scene and Dance Prague.
